Travelling to Europe in 2026? The One Big Change Every Visitor Should Know

If you are planning a trip to Europe in 2026, there is one change that affects almost everyone arriving from outside the European Union — and the good news is that, once you understand it, it is nothing to worry about. Europe has switched on a new digital border system, and it is now fully operational across the Schengen Area, the group of countries that includes France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Greece, Portugal, Austria, the Netherlands and more.

Here is what it means in plain terms. The old routine of an officer stamping your passport by hand is being replaced by a digital Entry/Exit System. On your first arrival, non-EU visitors register a short set of biometric details — a digital photograph and fingerprints — which is then linked to your passport. On future trips the system recognises you, so the check becomes faster. The purpose is a smoother, more modern border that also helps authorities keep accurate records of stays.

For travellers from within the EU, almost nothing changes. For visitors from the UK, the US, Canada, Australia and other visa-exempt countries, the only new step is that one-time registration, which takes just a couple of minutes. It is not a visa and there is no fee for the Entry/Exit System itself.

The honest caveat: because the system is new, some airports and border crossings may see longer queues at busy times during 2026, especially in peak summer when visitor numbers are expected to break records. Major airports have installed automated kiosks to speed things up, but it is still wise to allow extra time on arrival. Later in 2026, the EU also plans to launch ETIAS, a quick online travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors — worth knowing about before you book.

Below, we have gathered country-by-country travel updates for eight of Europe's most popular destinations. Each guide explains what is new, what to expect and how to plan a smoother, smarter trip in 2026.
